One of the highlights of traveling to Croatia is its food. Indulge in traditional Croatian dishes like “štrukli” and “zagrebački odrezak” in Zagreb, savor truffle-inspired delicacies in Istria, and feast on fresh seafood delicacies in places like Rovinj and Split. Whether you’re a foodie or an adventure lover, Croatia offers an unforgettable experience filled with gastronomic delights and breathtaking scenery.

Sample Five Day Itinerary

Day 1: Zagreb

  • Morning: Arrive in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, and fuel up with a hearty breakfast at a local café.
  • Afternoon: Explore the city’s historic Upper Town and visit Dolac Market to sample local produce, cheese, and cured meats.
  • Evening: Indulge in traditional Croatian dishes, such as “štrukli” and “zagrebački odrezak,” at one of Zagreb’s renowned restaurants.

Day 2: Plitvice Lakes National Park (This is a must-see! The Plitvice Lakes should be on everyone’s Croatia itinerary!)

  • Morning: Drive or take a guided tour to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty and go hiking along the park’s scenic trails.
  • Afternoon: Enjoy a picnic lunch with local specialties, such as “pršut” (cured ham) and “Sir i vrhnje” (cheese and cream), amidst the gorgeous lakes and waterfalls.
  • Evening: Return to Zagreb and dine at a modern Croatian restaurant, trying contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes.

Day 3: Istria

  • Morning: Travel to Istria, known for its gastronomic delights. Start the day with truffle hunting in the Motovun forest, accompanied by a local guide and trained dogs.
  • Afternoon: Visit a truffle farm and indulge in a truffle-inspired lunch, including dishes like truffle risotto or pasta.
  • Evening: Explore the charming town of Rovinj and feast on fresh seafood delicacies at a local waterfront restaurant.

Day 4: Zadar

  • Afternoon: Head to one of the local seafood restaurants near the port and indulge in a leisurely seafood lunch. Don’t miss the opportunity to try “crni rižot” (black risotto), a savory dish made with squid ink, or enjoy a platter of grilled fish accompanied by a refreshing green salad.
  • Evening: Treat yourself to a sunset dinner at a seafood restaurant with a stunning view of Split’s coastline. Enjoy specialties like “brancin” (sea bass) or “škampi” (Adriatic prawns) grilled to perfection, paired with a glass of local white wine. End the evening with a relaxing walk along the promenade, taking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city.
